The Mobile Art Studio is a 2009 Chevy short bus that has been converted into an Art Hive, Creative Re-Use centre and place making machine on wheels, with the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. As long as people can come together - in person or online - to create, the LivingRoom continues. The studio space at 149 Simcoe Street South was a special place, but what made it special were the people who used it, and how we used it together. ![]() Rather than compromise the quality of the experience, we decided to close the storefront studio in order to find new ways of bringing the studio to you and sparking the art of Human-ing. With the 2020 pandemic, the tiny storefront studio space was no longer safe or suitable for the diverse needs of the community members we worked with. We discovered that the Art of Human-ing was perhaps the most exciting creative process that we were engaging in, and that the things we made often supported or facilitated that exciting work. We explored and discovered ways to question, and clarify, resist and support, speak and embody our truths, and be ok with uncertainty and the weirdness of becoming. Through the art we created and the conversations that occurred around the art, we also learned about one another and ourselves. With the help of folx like you we opened a bricks and mortar store-front studio space in 2014 where people could walk in, grab materials and tools off the shelf to make whatever they wanted or needed to make in a supportive environment, welcoming around 15,000 visits a year from community members across Durham Region. a short 2 minute walk to The Red Studio. In 2013, the LivingRoom started as a weekly pop-up in a local restaurant that let us make use of their space after they’d closed. But I confess that I’d worried that this difference would not be well received in Herb’s eyes. Vera’s evolution to what it is today was necessary. But we are-in essence and in our DNA-still Herb’s Vera: empirical, independent, fierce, insistent, and endowed with entrepreneurial spirit. We have equipped ourselves with the tools-campaigns and advocacy to power our research-we need to end overcriminalization and mass incarceration, phenomena and terms that did not exist in 1961 as they do now. Where Vera once incubated organizations across New York City, we now strive for national change in policy and practice across state capitals and in Washington, DC, alongside partners from communities and allies in government. And we aspire to change at scale: to transform the field of prosecution to one that pursues justice, not jails to make sure that every single immigrant facing deportation has a government-funded lawyer and a chance to stay with their family and be part of our communities and to ensure that any incarcerated student can receive a quality college education, something increasingly necessary to thrive in this country. We focus explicitly and assiduously on eradicating racial injustice as our central tenet. He was focused on justice and making individual New Yorkers’ lives better. Yet, the Vera of today looks quite different than Herb’s. These organizations still exist to, among other things, help people find work after incarceration, provide counseling and treatment to people with criminal legal system involvement, treat survivors of crime with dignity and care, offer healing alternatives to prison, and provide guardianship to incapacitated people in desperate need of protection. The Vera he built and the empirical, fierce, insistent, and entrepreneurial spirit he fostered within its walls led to the incubation of almost 20 nonprofit organizations in New York. It would be enough if Herb had ended his work there. It is fair to say they have Herb to thank. Although the money bail system persists across the country-and has frankly become even worse after five decades of our stratospheric, unstoppable ascent into mass incarceration-at least in New York City, the home of the Manhattan Bail Project, more than 70 percent of people going through the courts are released back to their families, their jobs, and their homes, with a chance to fight their cases and preserve the stability and dignity of their lives. Attorney General Bobby Kennedy and eventually shaped the federal Bail Reform Act of 1966. criminal justice system the concept of “release on recognizance.” This concept, in turn, captured the imagination of then-U.S. The Manhattan Bail Project, which emerged from Herb’s hunch that money bail wasn’t necessary to get people to return to court, introduced to the U.S. ![]() Herb enlisted court representatives to advocate to criminal court judges for release without bail and hired researchers to study the impact of these judicial decisions. Out of that empirical investigation was born the commonsense, yet radical, notion that if the courts were worried that people wouldn’t return to court-so much so that they would impose bail as collateral-they could instead look at a person’s community ties as a better indicator. To the person, it was because they couldn’t pay for their liberty. Herb visited the Tombs, the notorious jail in downtown Manhattan, and went cell by cell asking people why they were incarcerated. In 1961, he was asked by Louis Schweitzer-the philanthropist who started this eponymous organization and the son of Vera Schweitzer-to find a solution to New York City’s overcrowded jails. Herb’s Vera story may be familiar to many here. ![]() It’s not the only unlocking method this year, though. In action, it feels about half a beat faster than when unlocking the Pixel 6 - just fast enough to be noticeable. Although it’s far from perfect, early adopters will be glad to learn this year’s sensor is definitely better. ![]() The Pixel 6 would routinely fail to recognize fingerprints, something Google embarrassingly blamed on “enhanced security algorithms.” Ultimately, it doesn’t seem like that was the case after numerous software patches, it remains a mediocre sensor.Īfter some slight improvements on the Pixel 6a earlier this year, it does seem like Google has gotten a handle on the situation. Not only was it slow to unlock, but for the first few months post-launch, it was also completely unreliable for daily use. Plenty of bloggers have worn out their keyboards while covering the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro’s sluggish in-display fingerprint sensor. Let’s talk biometrics, something the Pixel 6 series struggled with. I don’t think anyone will complain about Google’s build quality here, though if you're after pure luxury, you might be better off grabbing the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The phone feels premium, though perhaps not quite up to the level of Samsung’s recent Galaxy S-series phones. I have my qualms with the Pixel 7 Pro’s design, but overall, I quite like it. This high-gloss finish feels like something meant to look eye-catching while on display, but certainly not to be touched. If you have sweaty or clammy hands (as I do), the phone feels unpleasant to hold after a while, as all the oils from your palms build up. While the white model should do an alright job of hiding fingerprints and smudges, the black model I’m testing shows everything. This design is a cruel reminder of how I’d do anything to get back to the frosted glass seen on the Pixel 4. ![]() Like in 2021, the back of the Pixel 7 Pro is made of glossy glass, though the two-tone look is replaced by a single shade on both sides of the camera bar. Only the volume rocker and power buttons use a matte finish, giving us a small glimpse into a world where Google gave up on what it considers premium. This metal picks up fingerprints and smudges like crazy and quickly showed off scratches from regular use. It’s obvious that most smartphone companies see “shiny” as the current premium material to sell to users, but I can’t say I feel the same. Unfortunately, Google opted to use “polished” aluminum on the Pixel 7 Pro’s camera bar and frame rather than the matte metal seen on the Pixel 7. It also helps the phone stand out among a sea of competition - you always recognize a Pixel in a crowded room. Unlike the competition, the Pixel 7 Pro does not rock back and forth when it’s placed on a desk. If modern flagships are all but required to use a bump to fit various lenses and sensors, extending this space across the entire device makes sense. ![]() I suspect the camera bar will continue to be controversial among Pixel fans, but a year into this design, I love it. It’s also a practical change Google provides three cutouts in its aluminum-clad camera bar for the lenses and flash, which should prevent the lens flaring issues that plagued 2021's models. It’s a much better look - I always thought the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro looked unfinished in this regard. Instead, Google has opted to add an aluminum cover to the camera bar, blending seamlessly into the frame (give or take a couple of antenna lines). Gone is the black visor that helped inspire countless memes among gadget fans. You'll find the most obvious change on the camera bar. Google’s no different at first glance, the Pixel 7 Pro looks nearly indistinguishable from the 6 Pro, with all of its improvements found in the finer details of the phone. The Galaxy S22, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, the OnePlus 10 Pro, and Apple’s entire iPhone 14 series - all of these devices have offered slight refinements on whatever shipped the year before. In 2022, nearly every major smartphone company has shipped iterative successors to their previous flagship smartphones, choosing not to invest heavily in a fresh new take. |
